What’s in a Home?
A bunch of folks have been asking us the simple question of, “What’s in a home?” There are some differences when you are looking at custom homes versus homes from production builders. And we are here to go into some better detail to help you understand! The biggest misconception is that custom homes cost more money than their counterparts. Yet, be sure to do some research on standard features in your custom homes before the c-word scares you off! To try and illustrate how many of our builders have specific included features, we created an infographic. the graphic breaks down each feature.
How does this compare to production builders? We always urge you to do your own research! For serious home buyers, go out with a specific home skeleton in mind. Think about size, features, or anything that could add to the square footage. Then, make a list of all the features that you both WANT and NEED. Needs are non-negotiable and wants are your “nice to haves.” These features will be completely different for each buyer and that is okay!
Start researching your preferred communities, and whittle down to builders who could build your home! Walk their models, inventory homes, and clue them in on your preferred features. With this they can put your potential options with preliminary pricing. You’ll want to next go visit some area production builders as well and give them your similar list. Keep an eye on your need/want list and be sure to take note of which are included and which are not. You may be surprised at how fast a few “must haves” can add up in the selections process. Things like hardwoods throughout the home, granite in your kitchen, tile in all your bathrooms, can add up when it’s a la carte!
There is not one wrong or right answer on which is best for you and your family. It’s a matter of many factors including your budget, what your needs/wants look like, and so much more. Moral of the story: don’t be afraid to entertain the option of a custom home while letting the price run you off! It may not be nearly as crazy as you think once you get to the bottom of those beautiful must haves!
